Letter N is very Naughty! See what he does in the nursery as we learn the letter & sound of N.
In my virtual workshops I teach letters, sounds, and reading skills for Pre-K learners as well as children who struggle with speech and reading. The instruction provides multi-sensory and phonemic rhymes, songs, and hands-on activities with reading and writing suggestions for a total learning!
Children love learning about the "naughty" newt in the Amazing Action Alphabet Flip Chart! The newt is "naughty" because he writes on the walls with nail polish! So of course we explore the letter N with nail polish!
Use the nail polish to review the letters taught by painting each letter on the nail. I found a basic Hand Clip Art for you to use!
You can simply ask the child to identify the letter on each nail. If the child is correct they can paint the nail with nail polish.
Or you can ask the child to identify the letter that begins with a specific word. (e.g. "Paint the nail that begins with the word pan." The child would obviously paint the nail that has the letter p on it.)
Another enjoyable activity is matching the uppercase letters on the nail polish bottle with the lower case letters on a brush. I simply found a Nail Polish template and wrote the letters on the brushes and bottles.
A matching game really shows the teacher if the learner knows the skill taught.
Using nail polish is a great way to build fine motor skills. Many children do not want to use a pencil, but find painting with the nail polish much more enjoyable.
Using the nail polish uses the same motor skills as using a pencil... So your child is now "writing" with pleasure!

Here is a video to show you a fun lesson idea with the letter N!
Two other letters that are difficult for children to remember are the lowercase letters "n" and "u." Here are a few tips to help the child differentiate the two.
Lowercase letter "u" has a opening at the top of the letter. I tell the child that it's open so you can fill it up with water for U the pup, found in the Amazing Action Alphabet Flip Chart book.
Lowercase letter "n" has a curve on the top of the letter. I tell the child the curve is like the cure on your fingernail like the mom uses in the story with N the naughty newt, found in the Amazing Action Alphabet Flip Chart. (The mom shakes her finger and says /n/ /n/ /n/.)
I often draw an n on my fingernail to show the child
I hope this will help a child that you are working with! What are some tips you use that help? I love to hear how it's going. Comment on this blog and let's chat!
Get out the nail polish friends...let's learn about N the Naught Newt! In my Amazing Action Alphabet Flip Chart N story, N the Naughty Newt does some naughty drawings on the Nursery walls. He is scolded by his mother by the shaking of her pointer finger with a /n/ /n/ /n/ sound.

My preschool kids love getting out all the nail polish colors to paint N the Naughty Newt.
Funny story... years ago I was teaching this lesson when my 2 year old niece went into the back bedroom and poured paint on the carpet. /N/ /N/ /N/ we said as we cleaned up the "real" mess! My niece is 10 now and we all laugh about the lesson learned that day.
I hope you are making memories of your own in your classes!
