Most Common Mixed-up Letters... a, b, d

I've worked with children in classrooms and one-on-one for over 20 years.  What I'm about to share is a SIMPLE WAY to help the child remember the difference between 4 very similar letters.  Let's revisit the lowercase letters b and d as well as lowercase a and p. It is such a common error of most children to reverse these letters!  While reviewing the letters with the Amazing Action Alphabet Flip Chart I also bring out these cards.

My very favorite way to help children remember these letters is to say...

b.. Draw a wand first (straight line) then add the bubble (circle)

d... Draw a door knob first (circle) then draw a door (straight line)

a... Draw an apple (circle) then add a small tree branch (short line)

Dino Tracks

It's always fun to spark the excietment of learning a new letter and sound.  Today we used Dino Tracks leading to the letter D from the Amazing Action Alphabet Flip Chart.  I use the tracks to review letters or concepts.  Have your child or a group of children follow tracks and answers questions.  Today we reviewed some letters and letter sounds we already knew.

On your tracks you could also review shapes or numbers.  Once your child reviews all of the Dino Tracks they can find the letter of the day.../d/ /d/ /d/ say's D the Dinosaur!

FREE Dinosaur Review Bones for YOU!

Say hello to a future  paleontologist !  {Hello}   We were looking for a GIANT T-Rex bone, but today we found letter D instead.

A great way to review letters and sounds is by finding buried bones in sand, rice or even fruit loops!  Once the child finds a bond have them say the name of the letter and the sounds it makes, and then dig again!

Dotty Dinosaur

We're still talking about D the Dinosaur over here!   Today we pulled out your handy-dandy Amazing Action Alphabet "D the Dinosaur's Dot's" page, and made some dot art.  If you haven't purchased your Activity Book... {buy one here}

For this activity decorate 'D' with DOTS!  Use stickers, poster painters, or punch out colorful dots and and glue them to the letter D.

Enhance this activity by then putting your dotty dinosaur on a math page like this one.  Make up simple questions that would apply to the color of dots you used.  The questions I used were:

My Dino has ___________white dots.

My Dino has ___________ red dots.

My Dino has ___________ blue dots.

My Dino has ___________ black dots.

Ta-da!  Look at your kids learning so much!  They are "Dino"mite!  

D is for Dino Feet

For Dino Day it so enjoyable to dance around with D the Dinosaur and make the /d/ /d/ /d/ sound while wearing dino feet!  

You can make your own dino feet out of paper using a similar template I found online.

I wanted to make some dino feet that would last a longer.  I made up my own pattern using felt. 

One of my favorite songs on my Amazing Action Alphabet CD is D the Dinosaur.  She dances to Disco music...anytime you use music + learning letters and sounds = Dino-mite results!
