Letter A Virtual Workshop

Teaching one of my favorite letters using Amazing Action Alphabet.  You're going to love my letter A workshop! 

In my virtual workshops I teach letters, sounds, and reading skills for Pre-K learners as well as children who struggle with speech and reading. The instruction provides multi-sensory and phonemic rhymes, songs, and hands-on activities with reading and writing suggestions for a total learning!

Mr. Alligator Teaches Letter A Through Song

Letter A has always been a favorite letter to teach using the Amazing Action Alphabet Flip Chart. Today I reviewed  the alphabet letters with a variation of an old familiar tune "One Little Monkey." It goes something like this...

"One little letter swinging from a tree
Teasing Mr. Alligator...can't catch me.
Can't catch me!
Along comes Mr. Alligator as quiet as can be 
And chomps a _______right out of the tree." 

The child then says the name of the letter the alligator chomped out of the tree.  If they say the letter's name and sound the letter can be eaten by the alligator and removed from the tree. 

Apple Day Activities and Crafts

Preschoolers love learning about the Letter A & Apple Day!  Today I want to share some apple crafts and activities that are easy and fun for young learners.  Using recycled objects for circle painting, chalkboard writing, and sticker crafts all made Apple Day a success!  Other fantastic Apple Unit activities could include an apple rotting experiment, writing in apple sauce,  and playing: "What weighs more than an apple?"

  

A the Alligator in the Amazing Action Alphabet Flip Chart was the perfect base to our  A Day activities.  After reviewing the story about "A" and learning what A the Alligator says...we got straight to business!  During each activity we practiced the action for letter "A" and what it says.  Ask any of the kids today, they got it!  

Recycled Apple Painting

I have saved, recycled and rounded objects to be used for circle painting.  Today was just the day to bring them out!  Using objects to paint can be a simple way to incorporate arts and crafts in learning letters and numbers.

We talked about what object is taller, wider, shorter, thicker.  Each child was excited to make their own RED, CIRCLE apple.

We added a touch of green for the stem, and called it a bushel of fun!

Chalkboard Letter Writing

We used this chalkboard wall today to practice writing the capital letter A.  After reading this great article "Why kids should work on a vertical surface" you might decide to paint a chalkboard wall too! 

Ten Apples On Top 

I love reading a classic apple book!  This book sparked some ideas...How many apples can balance on your head?  The kids thought balancing 2 was quite hard!

First we drew a little self portrait, using circles of course!  Then we used  circle sticker labels and balanced as many "apples" as we could.

Making The Most Of Each Theme

The themes suggested in the Amazing Action Activity Book allows a teacher to incorporate LITERACY, SCIENCE, MATH, and HEALTH while learning each new letter and sound.  

Let's take the letter A for an example.  The theme here is APPLES & ANTS

LITERACY:
In the Amazing Action Alphabet Flip Chart the child engages with the teacher while saying /a/ /a/ /a/ each time the ants try to steal A the Alligator's apple.

"/a/ /a/ /a/, give me back my apple!"

Here is a fun way to review the letter A.

SCIENCE:

Those pesky ants drive us crazy!  So....Why not learn about them?!  Ants are insects.  What makes an insect?  

• 3 body parts
• 2 eyes
• 1 antenna

Did you know...Ants don't have ears.  Ants "hear" by feeling vibrations in the ground through their feet!

 MATH:

After learning a little about ants, let's make our own ant by using the A activity found in the Amazing Action Alphabet Activity Book (also available as an eBook).

  

Lets count...3 finger print body parts, 6 straight legs and 2 googly eyes.  Phew!  Those ants can really dig messes through the sand.  Did you know... there are more than 12,000 different species of ants all over the world!

HEALTH:

With all that learning...we've worked up an appetite!  Now it's time for a snack!  Ants on a log are suggested in the snack section of the Amazing Action Alphabet Activity Book.

"Ants on a log" can be a nutritious and yummy!  Celery is a good vegetable, and peanut butter is a great protein.  Top that off with "ants" (aka raisins) you have completed OUTSTANDING teaching for preschoolers on Apple and Ants day.

Apples With Poster Paint

Today we practiced our numbers, traced letters and threw in a little fun with poster paint!  With a basic tree clip art have the child use poster paint and make apples. 

1...2...3...4...how can we teach the letter A some more!?!

A is for Apple

Using the Amazing Action Alphabet Flip Chart the letters really come to life!

A the alligator is angry and makes the sound /a/ /a/ /a/!!!

(I would be angry too if someone took my juicy red apple!)

With red paper have the children rip small pieces to cover an apple, and use a little green for the stem.

Voila!....there you have a little mosaic art!

A the Alligator:  When the child is making “ants” from their fingerprints, ask them to make three fingerprints together for each of the ants body parts. This is a great way to integrate science into this activity, all insects have a head, thorax, and an abdomen.  Then ask them to attach six legs to the ant, again because insects have six legs.  Children love googly eyes, so of course it is fun to add those.  This activity is found in The Amazing Action Alphabet Book page 11.
